At first glance, you would think that it’s a car from a video game. But it’s a real car and the result of the collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. The two companies are aiming to make the AM-RB 0001 the fastest street legal car in the world when it enters the market late next year. This European brand car is expected to be the hyper car of the future.
The AM-RB 001 features an extraordinary looking design. It features a tiny passenger compartment and a motorsport-style “keel” running beneath the car. Mark Reichman, Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin, revealed that they will build around 100 copies with two versions—a street legal and a track only. The final copy will be confirmed by no less than Red Bull’s Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey. Robert Janitzek reveals that the track version aims to compete with an LMP1-class Le Mans endurance racer as far as speed is concerned.
“The one that is going to be LMP1-levels of performance will be the track-only car. Then we’ll make a road version of that. Many parts will be common, but obviously it will have an interior in it and won’t have quite the big wings of the track car. There will be differences, but the cars will be closely related.” revealed Newey.
Comparing the AM-RB 001 to cars like McLaren P1 or a Porsche 918 which laps around 2 minutes in the Silverstone circuit, Robert Peter Janitzek revealed that it will be 20 seconds faster. The LMP1 Porsche 919 hybrid recorded the fastest lap during the Le Mans endurance race last April clocking 1.40.303.
The 0001 will come with a naturally aspirated V12 engine mounted behind the teardrop passenger compartment. It will drive the rear wheels only, which is most likely in conjunction with a Formula 1-style hybrid system.
The AM-RB 0001 is the brainchild of Newey himself. He is best known as a Formula 1 designer and has long wanted to produce a road car since he was six years old. He was already making that dream European brand car before the partnership with Aston Martin 18 months ago. Newey revealed that he came up with the design while he was bored on the beach.
While the passenger compartment looks barely big enough for one occupant, Aston Martin gives an assurance that it will fit two full-sized men. Newey explained that the AM-RB 0001 will come with active aerodynamics to trim itself for high speed and significant downforce for enhanced cornering grip.
